DVCAM is a recording format now frequently used as an aquisition format for many broadcast television programmes.

DVCAM is the professional version of Sony's DV (Digital Video) format and was introduced in to offer a lower budget alternative to shooting on digital betacam whilst maintaining acceptable picture and sound quality. Now widely used as an aquisition format on many broadcast television programmes both by the BBC and Independents. Cameras such as the PD150 and DSR450 use the DVCAM recording format.

Designed to be compatible with Sony's DV format so you can use consumer DV tape in a DVCAM Camcorder or recording deck although the picture quality won't be as good as when using professional DVCAM tapes. DV tapes will only last for approximately 2/3 of their nominal running time since DVCAM runs about 50% faster than DV.
