Grouchos

Another term for Marks (as in Groucho Marx). Taped marks on a set to position actors, focus, or dolly points.
Grouchos or Marks are usually pieces of coloured camera tape placed on the set floor. They have many uses and can indicate to an actor where they have to move to during the action. They are also used by the focus puller to mark focus points on the set so that when an actor reaches a given Mark, the focus should be set at a known distance. The grip will also use Marks to indicate where to stop the dolly so that the camera reaches its preset position and there can be several dolly Marks during a piece of action. These Marks are known as Number 1, 2, 3 etc so you will often hear the camera operator asking to be taken to "Number 1s" or "Number 2s" etc.
