Key Light

The main directional lighting source used to light a scene.

Very simply, if you are lighting a person, the key light will normally be 45 degrees above and 45 degrees to the side of the subject. Shadow areas are then reduced using a fill light. You can then go on to add back light, kicker, and set lights.

Using a basic key, backlight and fill set up is known as 3 point lighting.
