Mini DV Video Format

Mini DV is a digital video format aimed at the amateur and consumer market
Mini DV was intoduced in 1994 as an improvement on analogue video formats such as VHSC or Hi8. Mini DV is not a broadcast quality format although some broadcasters will accept it as long as it does not exceed a given percentage of the whole programme. Mini DV does not support time code and the sound can be up to +/- 1/2 frame out of sync with the picture. Manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic, JVC and Canon produce a wide range of mini DV camcorders, but for anything approaching professional use, you'll need to chose a 3 CCD version with interchangeable lenses such as the Canon XL1 or XL2.
