Slate Board

Clapper board Slate board BBC Casualty

Also known as the clapper board, this is used to mark the scene number & take number when filming.

The Slate Board is held in front of the camera by the Clapper Loader before the action commences and the clapper is snapped shut to give an audible sync point for sound as well as a visual sync point for camera. This allows the separate sound tape to be married up to the picture in post production so that the picure and sound can be played together in sync. Takes can be marked before the action commences (Front Board) or at the end of the action (End Board). An End Board is signified by holding the Slate Board up side down which clearly shows the editor that this board refers to the preceding take.
