Sound Recordist

Drama Sound Recordist Zaxcom Deva
Location Sound Recordist Kevin Meredith
The person who places microphones and operates sound equipment to record the sound of a television or film production

The sound recordist is responsible for the recording of location sound. In the case of a drama recordist this is mainly the script being spoken by the cast. The recordist will decide how to cover the action and whether to use radio mics, boom mics or both. He or she will have talkback to communicate with the boom swingers who are also given a programme feed to help them pick up the best sound. It involves closely following the script to know when an actor is going to speak and therefore when to fade up the correct microphone. Sound is recorded directly to the cameras in the case of a video shoot as well as to a separate recorder which is usually a digital 8 track recorder such as the Zaxcom Deva.

The recordist will also record all the necessary wild tracks or atmos tracks to make sure that the dubbing editor has all the components needed to assemble the tracklay.
