Space lights are used to give an overall soft top light generally over a large area. They are good for creating an out doors daylight feel to a set. A space light is made up from 6 1kw tungsten tubes split into 2 circuits of 3 kw each so you can run them at full or half power. The whole lighting unit is surrounded by a cylinder of heat proof diffusion cloth with another piece clipped across the bottom. The nature of space lights means that the light is directionless and very soft and the downside of this is that it can be hard to control unwanted spill flooding all over the set. One way of stopping light going where it's not wanted is to hang black cloth round half of the spacelight or by placing large flags between the light and the set.
