Tracking Shot

The name for a type of shot where the camera moves horizontally with the action.

Tracking shots are achieved with a track and dolly and are a very effective way of moving the camera to follow action or to develop a shot. Often the camera will track to follow actors as they move, but equally a tracking shot can move around static actors or an object to add interest to what would otherwise be a staic shot. Moving the camera forward towards the subject is known as tracking in, tracking out describes the opposite movement.

Tracking in / out produces a very different effect to zooming in or out.
