Viewfinder

Viewfinder on a Sony Camcorder

This is the part of the camera that the operator looks through to see what is being recorded.

In a video camera the image is sent electronically to either a black and white or colour CRT which is then viewed through the viewfinder. The camera operator uses this to select the framing, pan and tilt the camera to follow action and to adjust focus. It is important that the operator adjusts the focus of the viewfinder to suit his or her eyesight before using the viewfinder to focus the image. Also known as the eyepiece although this is more often used when referring to a film camera.
