White Balance

Setting a camera to produce accurate colours in a given ambient light situation

Cameras, both video and film, are sensitive to colour temperature and have to be adjusted so that the colours they produce are accurate for a given colour temperature. If the scene is predominantly lit by daylight, then the camera will have to be set for a daylight colour temperature of about 6300 deg K. Likewise, for a tungsten lit scene the camera will be set or "balanced" for tungsten colour temperature of around 3200 deg K.

This can be done by white balancing for electronic cameras, or by placing a colour correction filter in the matte box, or by choice of film stock for film cameras.
