XDCAM is Sony's Professional Disc Recording System

XDCAM was first launched in Setember 2003 with the PDW-510 and PDW-530 camcorders. XDCAM is a non linear, tapeless recording system where the images are written as files to the optical disc. So instead of using say a DVCAM or Digibeta tape, the camcorder is loaded with an optical disc which stores all the image data. This disc is then used to transfer images to the edit suite.
