I started my Broadcast industry career in 2000 as a salesman at equipment reseller Mitcorp. Previous to that I had a background in stills photography with Polaroid and Tudor Photographic. Whilst at Mitcorp I learnt so much about the industry, the equipment, and the characters you come across. Within a few months I realised that this was such a diverse, interesting and fun industry, I wanted to stay in and around it for a while.
I progressed to Sales Manager, but in 2006 I fancied a move, and joined the hire and large projects business Charter Broadcast. They were a customer of mine when I was at Mitcorp and I knew the business quite well. As Sales and Marketing Director, I learned so much about how a large hire and projects business works, as well as making some good friends.
I left Charter just before the sale of the business to Presteigne and had a decision either to go back to kit sales, or to make a big jump out of my comfort zone. I'd always referred business to Fineline when I was at Mitcorp. Fineline just seemed to make the financing of equipment seem very easy for my customers, so I made the move and joined Fineline on the strength of that experience and respect for the friends I had there already.
Without doubt, it's been my best decision in my career. As it's owned by N M Rothschild, we have guaranteed funding and have been able to offer a continuity of service despite all the banking turmoil of the past 3 years. And the cameramen and larger businesses that would like some help buying their next piece of equipment enjoy dealing with someone who knows equipment. Not having to explain to a "finance guy" what XDCAM HD or P2 is gives my customers the peace of mind that I know what I'm talking about. And having seen a few different sides to the industry, I can often offer some advice on what format is flavour of the month or the next big thing.
