Fully Gyro Stabilised or Ball Mounts

Ball Mount rigged on helicopter for filming by Castle Air

Ball mounts are so called because they are housed in a spherical windshield to protect them from the environment. These fully gyro stabilised mounts offer very stable plate quality images even in moderately windy conditions. Camera start / stop, pan & tilt are controlled remotely from inside the aircraft and the image is viewed by a remote video monitor. Different versions are available for Standard Definition, High Definition video or film cameras.

The great advantage of these stabilised ball mounts is their ability to offer steady close ups by using long focal length zoom lenses. The aircraft can be positioned a long way from the subject, sometimes 1,000 ft or more and still achieve a steady close up which could zoom out to reveal a wide aerial panorama.

Points to note:

  • Very stable pictures even with high magnification lenses up to around 1000mm focal length
  • Film cameras using a Ball Mount cannot be reloaded in flight
  • Tape or disc based systems can be reloaded in flight since the recorder is held inside the aircraft
  • Easy to clean the lens in flight on some side mounted installations
  • Can be side or front mounted
  • No restriction on airspeed
  • No need to remove a door
