Easy ways to save energy

Turn off your TV / PC / Workstation overnight
This really is a 'no brainer' and everyone should do it. Turn it completely off, at the power outlet. No standby lights or clocks should be showing on your device.
Doing just this overnight for a year can save you enough energy to boil a kettle 820 times
The Maths
Based on turning off the device for 16 hours out of every 24 hours for 365 days
| Device | Standby energy use | Cost per hour @ 10p per kWh | Yearly saving from overnight switch off | Yearly energy saving | Number of kettles boiled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40in LCD TV | 7 watts | £ 0.0007 | £4.09 | 40.88 kWh | 820 |
Computer Monitor | 1.4 watts | £ 0.000014 | £0.82 | 8.18 kWh | 163 |
Use low energy light bulbs in your home or office
Another very easy step. Choose 2 old fashioned 60 watt incandescent light bulbs and replace them with 14 watt low energy flourescent bulbs. The light output is the same. Admittedly they are more expensive in the first place but they last a lot longer and the energy saving is dramatic.
Doing this for a year can save you enough energy to boil a kettle 3,840 times
The Maths
Based on running 2 light bulbs 8 hours per day, 5 days per week for 52 weeks
| Bulb type | Energy use | Cost per hour @ 10p per kWh | Yearly energy used | Yearly saving | Yearly energy saved | Number of kettles boiled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Incandescent | 2 x 60 watts | £0.012 | 250 kWh | |||
| Fluorescent | 2 x 14 watts | £0.0028 | 58 kWh | £19.20 | 192 kWh | 3,840 |
